Parental Responsibility
The parent that has parental responsibility automatically has the right to be involved in key decisions made in their child’s life. This will include medical treatments, where/how the child is to be educated and religious orientation.
When married, both mother and father are equally responsible for these important decisions. If your child was born to unmarried parents prior to 1 December 2003, then the father would need to be registered on the birth certificate to have automatic parental responsibility. If the child was born after 2003 or the father is not registered on the birth certificate then there would need to be a formal agreement with the mother or the court to obtain parental responsibility.
